Is it an attempt at financial to get married in the United States in this day of age?

Recently my best friend, age 30, about 10 years older than I am, was put through a divorce because his wife "fell out of love". My friend is an electrical engineer, and made a nice salary of about 100,000 US dollars a year (masters degree from Drexel University, Philadelphia). With the divorce, he is forced to pay 25% of his bi-weekly check for child care, for three children, I don't really remember their ages, nor do I really care. 15% of his paycheck is going for an alimony for his wife. It gets a bit better, because the house that they lived in (now his ex-wife lives in) still has a mortgage, and his former spouse is unemployed, he was ordered by the divorce court to make monthly payments on it. So is it truly an attempt at financial suicide for a man to get married, if his wife ever decides she want's a divorce?
