As a Graphic Design major does it matter where you get your degree or just portfolio?

I'm trying to choose a school, Cal Poly Slo, and Cal State East Bay. Cal Poly has obvious recognition of being a better school. Well at least for Engineering. but.. it would be way more convenient to go to CSEB. Does it matter where I go to school or as long as I have a great portfolio?
